You may have been travelling for a long time or this may be your first big trip. No matter what kind of travelling you are, here that some tips based on my various travel experiences could help you get the most out of your vacation.

Here are our 5 top tips for getting the most out of your travels.

1.NO CAMERAS PLEASE – Stop trying to Instagram everything. Challenge yourself to leave your phone behind from time to time. Live this experience rather than document it. It’s not the end of the world if you don’t record every moment of your travels, and you’ll stop feeling pressure to always get the perfect photo. Enjoy the moment properly and commit things to memory.

2. LESS IS MORE – Drop one tourist attraction off your list. Instead, use that time to sit with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and observe!  If you really want to get a feel for the pulse of a place, observe the daily life around you. Practice being fully present and observant; you can really slow down your train of thought and pay close attention to the smells, the sounds, the colours, and the human interactions, around you. You’ll see things you may have been too busy to notice before.  By trying to do everything, you don’t get to experience anything.  If you really take the time to explore one place, you’ll learn about activities that aren’t in your guidebook and meet people who are eager to show you around. 3. PATIENCE IS IMPORTANT – Don’t sweat the stuff you can’t control. Life is much too short to be angry & annoyed all the time. Did you miss your bus? No worries, there will be another one. Keep in open mind and take a deep breath.  It is also important when you are in a new place to not judge the lifestyles or customs of others if they are different to your own. Listen to new opinions, practice empathy, and embrace other possibilities, religions and interests. Ask questions, you will be surprised what you’ll learn!

4. TAKE IT ALL IN – As travellers, we have the opportunity to approach new places with curiosity and without the ignorance of ‘knowing everything’. Everything is new and fascinating, and we can take in the details that the locals take for granted. Look up not forward. We can get so distracted by what’s going on around us-crowds of people, chaotic cars, activity everywhere-it creates a certain chaos in our heads, allowing us to hide in our thoughts rather than experience the moment. Instead, look up at the roofs of historic buildings, the architectural style of this foreign city, the way even the clouds look different in a foreign sky. Appreciate the difference and allow it to help you re-enter the present.

5. BREAK OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE – Go out of your way to make connections with others and challenge yourself to try new things. You are already somewhere new, so you may as well embrace another new experience like whitewater rafting through the Balinese Jungle. By doing something uncomfortable or foreign, you will discover something new about yourself!
